Top Four Drivers of the Season Opener in Bahrain

What a race! I can count on two hands how many years its been since we've had a true battle for first place in F1's premier race. This season is looking up to be a real title fight for first place. Without further adieu, let's get into today's best.

Honorable mention: Yuki Tsunoda

Honorable mention goes to the man who broke three records for his country today (youngest Japanese driver, first to score points on a debut, and most points for his age respectively). Tsunoda's star shone bright, and he's starting to show shades of a young Gasly.

Fourth: Lando Norris

fourth on the final grid translates to fourth overall in the drivers of the day listing. Though it's difficult to judge where he'll be early on based on his car's worth, top of the midfield drives will be surely never go under-appreciated. Consistency is the word always thrown around for sophomore drivers, and as Lando graduates into his third year in F1, he looks well on his way towards securing that title.

Third: Sergio Perez

Perez might be the most unexpected entrant into a top three team in a long while. His contact was stable, and his team loved him. 12 months later and he's taking P5 in totally different overalls. Nevertheless, this was the reason they brought him in. While pit lane starts likely would've spelt disaster for Albon or Gasly during their times with the team, Perez's old head on middle-aged shoulders ensured he knew just how to extract the maximum out of what was an ailing car all weekend.

Second: Max Verstappen

Max is the kind of driver that won't see second as a victory. Despite the massively encouraging signs that his team is well on its way to its first World Championship victory since 2013, Max will walk away from Bahrain 2021 with regret. Should he have passed Hamilton and gone for the win? Data says he probably should've, but Red Bull aren't so sure about what to do from the front anymore. You get the feeling this is his year, and we may not be looking back on this race with any lack of fondness all too soon.

First: Lewis Hamilton

The king is back. Winners are always unpopular, and Lewis is ultimately no exception, but when they're pushed to their limits, that's when they become the most relatable. The black Mercedes looked like an antelope on the run this afternoon. Verstappen's Red Bull was whipping around corners at speeds the Mercedes looked entirely shaky emulating. Still, despite the ultimate incompetency of his teammate, Hamilton managed a drive worthy of his title. May Sir Lewis Hamilton give us many races like this one in the future.
