DIP: Marcus Ericsson

The 23 year old has not had the easiest path to a 2014 Formula 1 seat, but after reading his biography it looks like he just might be the most special rookie this season. He started in unexpectedly hard conditions, his family was not especially rich, and he wash't even considering racing as a career. His first major taste of Motorsport came at only age 9 when Fredrik Ekblom, WTCC and CART racer. He convinced Eriksson's dad to buy him a kart, and Eriksson raced karts for the next four years until he was fully discovered at 13. He was spotted and soon backed by Indy 500 winner Kenny Brack. He was quoted saying: "I spotted Marcus at a race in Gothenburg" Bräck says, "He didn't win the race because his engine blew up with two laps to go but he was clearly the best out there. He didn't get caught in any battles when passing – he'd just wait for the right opportunity, then he pounced and he was away. He has such patience but when he does go for it, it measures so perfectly. He reminded me of watching Alain Prost." Maybe it's just me, but being compared to statistically the third best Formula 1 driver of all time at age 13 sounds amazing. His racing career took off after that moment in 2006. He won his first ever championship in Formula BMW in 2007 against notable driver Josef Kral. He also won the second race that year. It took him a mere 2 years to reach GP2 from there. He's been in GP2 ever since joining in 2009 and this seat at Caterham has been a long time coming.

Why he'll make it in F1:

1. He got here on talent only
2. He was compared to Alain Prost by a Indy 500 winner at the age of Nine
3. He won his first ever open wheel series against much more experienced drivers
4. He's a GP2 race winner
5. He tested a championship winning car in 2009 (Brawn GP)
