Top 5 Moments of U.S.A Grand Prix

5. 1946 Indianapolis Grand Prix

Most people aren't familiar with this, but this race was where helmets were first used. Rudolff Caracholo was told by a steward that he could not race without a helmet. So he got a leather cap! That was the first time helmets were used on F1 and without it, a lot more deaths could have happened over the years. A classic US Grand Prix moment.

4. 1981/2 Las Vegas Grand Prix

That Grand Prix was awesome. Basically, they took the parking lot of Caesar's Palace Casino, and made it a Grand Prix track. It was run twice, in '81 and '82. It's just one of those things that you say "only in America" about, so I thought it deserved a spot on here.

3. 2012 Circuit of the Amercias Grand Prix

Coming back to America was a grand occasion. It won Sporting Event of the Year in 2012, a well deserved title. Not only was bringing F1 back to the US a spectacle, but the Grand Prix itself was great. For only the second time ever Vettel was chased down after taking a dominating lead in the opening laps. His car was fine, but Hamilton chased him down. The celebration was just as memorable, with specialized Pirelli Stetsons and World Champion Mario Andretti.

2. 1988 Detroit Grand Prix

This race was special undoubtedly, and it was the last in Detroit. It was won by Ayrton Senna with Alain Prost in second. Having a Grand Prix in Detroit was a great thing and this last one was a spectacular way to end it's run.

1. 1961 Watkins Glen Grand Prix

This is the greatest race in USA Grand Prix history. Legendary track, legendary drivers, and a legendary moment. At that race, Phil Hill officially became the first ever American World Champion. On top of that, Dan Gurney, another notable American driver came in second. It was a ground-breaking moment in American Racing, and it couldn't have come to a more deserving man. A commentator once said of Hill,
"He was mature beyond his years. He had incredible warmth and regard for everyone and a willingness to help and support people, whoever they were. He was so generous."

Happy Independence Day  very special ForeverF1 readers!
