Remember When?: USA Grand Prix 2005

Back in 2005, when the US hosted a Grand Prix (if you can even call it a Grand Prix) in Indianapolis, and the starting grid looked bare to say the least. The reason was that drivers running the Michelin tires would not/could not run for safety issues. Michelin even announced it themselves. Due to this, only six cars and three teams that were on Bridgestone tires started the race. 14 drivers withdrew in total, even the pole-sitter. The raced finished with a Ferrari 1-2 in the form of Schumacher and Barichello respectively. Jordan occupied the last spot on the podium.

Up to now, four Pirellis have exploded this season. Simply just failed. The exact same problem that Michelin had in 2005. Obviously, the teams don't have a choice of tire, and it's not Pirelli's fault, but regardless, it is clearly an issue. I mean F1 is all about the best: the best drivers, the best cars, the best engineers the best equipment, etc. so why have second-rate tires? Also, it reverses a lot of what the FIA has done to create safety in Formula One. For example what happened to Ralf Schumacher in 2005 (see above) was an accident that could have killed him, and it was very similar to what happened to Vergne in Catalunya. Long story short, Pirelli needs to change its tires or we will end up in a situation comparable to the 2005 United States Grand Prix.
