Women in Formula One

Inspired by Sterling Moss' comment about how women don't have the mentality to be in F1, I ask, do they? Currently, the woman in the biggest position in F1 is Monisha Katlenborn, who is currently the CEO and team manager of Sauber F1 Team. She worker her way up the ladder and inherited the team from Peter Sauber himself. So far, she's done a pretty good job, bringing Sauber from 7th place and 44 points in 2011 to 126 points and 6th place in 2012. Obviously it wasn't entirely due to him, but team managers are definitely a crucial part of the development of the car and the team in general. Like Brawn at Benetton, Ferrari, and Brawn GP.

As far as female drivers, the one who is most often quoted as the next woman driver in F1 is Susie Wolff. A third driver at Williams, a team that likes to dump drivers, she's got a great chance to win a place there for next year or even years to come. However, what legacy would she be stepping into? Well, over the history of F1, there have only been 6 female Formula 1 drivers. Maria Teresa de Filippis, Lella Lombardi, Divina Galica, Desire Wilson, and Giovanna Amati. Altogether, they have a combined point total of .5. The highest finish by a women driver was 6th in the Grand Prix of Spain in 1995. Altogether in number of starts, they have 29. So, there really isn't much data about women in F1, a women has never even done a full season for Pete's sake. Effectively, this means that Moss is wrong simply because there is no data to prove it for either side. As my personal, non-fact based opinion, I just think it was an out of place comment and a bit sexist.
