Tires Are King: How to Win a Championship in Modern Day F1

As I've mentioned before in the past, there is a new trend happening in Formula 1, and that's working the pit stops. Consider Australia, where Raikkonen won 'the easiest race of his life'. Mercedes earned two poles in a row in the last two races, but fell off within 10 laps both times due to their need for crazy amounts of tire conserving. Consider this, if tires were not an issue, who would have won both China and Bahrain? Most likely Mercedes. It's an interesting shift, and it gives teams like Lotus and Mclaren the chance to compete for the championship without being that fast. For example, in Malaysia, Lotus finished nowhere because they didn't fully get the tire advantage. Ditto in China.

Some might say that it's not real racing, that it takes away good overtaking because the drivers are just racing for a lap time, not for direct position. I have to say, that is pretty true. On the other hand, you get to see people change tires more. Wait, I just realized, seeing people changing tires is not why I watch F1! As you can probably see, I have strong feelings against having high-degradable tires.
