Pay Drivers

Pastor Maldonado: He is most likely the most apparent person that would be considered as a pay driver. He's crashed out of both races this year. Plus, last year, out of 20 races, he crashed in 20% of them. If he hadn't crashed those 5 times, he would have gained an extra 45 points. Just without minus-ing the places others would have lost because of his being ahead of them, he would have gone from his actual final position of 15th to a whopping 10th, a colossal difference. He was the most penalized driver of 2012, losing over 40 qualifying positions due to amassed penalties for the whole season. He did have a few shining moments, like winning in Barcelona and qualifying in the top five a handful of times. He brings millions of dollars to Williams because of his backing from the government of Venezuela and other Venezuelan sponsors.

Pay Driver Scale Rating: 8/10

Sergio Perez: The young Mexican Formula One driver has also come under fire for just being a money-bringer. That claim does seem to have evidence to support it, since Mclaren dumped their long-standing premier sponsor Vodafone for Perez' premier sponsor, Telmex. He hasn't performed well when stacked up against Button, and he is most likely not going to be a World Champion. For those reasons, his pay driver scale rating is: 9/10

Giedo van der Garde & Max Chilton: While both have talent, they both are literally just pay drivers. When Timo Glock left Marussia, he said that he did it, in part, to allow drivers with more money to come in and supply Marussia. VDG is pretty much the same, because Caterham expelling their better driver and ex-Mclaren driver makes no pace sense, so it was definately money. However, Chilton has excelled in Marussia's junior program, and VDG did great in Australia to keep the unstable car on track and to not crash in his first race. Even though he hasn't beaten Pic at all, he's been pretty consistant, so their combined pay driver rating is: 7/10

  1. Perez is no longer sponsored by Telmex, his salary is being paid by the team. Telmex now sponsors Gutierrez.
