Renault Vs. Mercedes

In 2014, Formula One engines will be changed from V8s to V6 Turbos. Along with that change, there will also most likely be one less engine supplier, Cosworth. Since it currently only supplies one team, Marussia, it doesn’t make sense to stay, because they’d probably switch engines anyway. So, which engine should Marussia transfer to, and which one seems like the better option in general? Well, since Ferrari is very selective about who they give engines to, let’s rule them out, and just focus on Mercedes and Renault.

Renault is certainly considered to be the better choice, and theoretically, it makes sense. They supply the engines to the winning team, so it must me the best right? Well, not quite. Renault as an engine has not shown much to the end of it being the most reliable, or the fastest engine. It broke down multiple times last year for multiple teams. However the main issue with Renault is that they are just focused on Red Bull’s needs. When Kovalinen’s Caterham broke down in Australia 2012, it caused barely any commotion, and Renault did not respond. Yet when the Red Bull broke down, Renault immediately sent droves of engineers to the Red Bull garage to help out.

Mercedes on the other hand, had no engine failures last year, it had all Mercedes powered cars sweep the podium, and has no alliance towards one specific team. Also, Mercedes (the team) had many sessions where they had the highest top speed. It is true, that HRT also had many times where they were the fastest in a straight line, however that is probably due to the lack of downforce. However Mercedes is no such a team, and while they do have issues with understeer a lot, they are still a team that is fast and has the ability to add downforce.

The better engine: Mercedes
