Many have forgotten, through 20+ second pits stops and constant DNFs that last year, the Mclaren was lighting quick in multiple qualifying sessions and grabbed a handful of poles. In a way, the mishaps were a good thing, because they were put out of the championship early, and gave them a head start in the development race, and if Mclaren can harness the same speed and match it with Lotus consistency (not including Grosjean), they could be a major force next year. Not only that, but considering that tires are supposed to be even more of a talking point, and this year, Mclaren is equipped with two expert tire conserving drivers. Button promises to be a player in this year's championship.
The car itself hasn't changed drastically, but that could be a good thing, because as I said before, they had the pace last year. The wing is more developed, the sidepods are smaller and the car is now sideways (just kidding). The most important change is the underside, which is evidently supposed to be groundbreaking, so watch out for that in 2013.
