Lotus: Raikkonen Vs. Grosjean
Following a tragic season with few high points, Grosjean is
at a crossroad. He needs to tone down his excitement and still maintain his
pace. Schumacher had this same dilemma at the beginning of his career, and
well, he is now the most successful Formula One driver in history. Not in any
way am I trying to suggest that Grosjean is the next Michael Schumacher, but
their choices were similar. Then other side is him being too cautious and
losing his pace altogether. It’s an obvious choice, but easier said than done.
Then there’s Raikkonen who’s the exact opposite and knows what he’s doing, so
for this season, I’ll bet on Raikkonen.
Mercedes: Rosberg Vs. Hamilton
An interesting decision because Rosberg is a force to be
reckoned with and is technically the #1 driver at the team, although I expect
that Mercedes will back Hamilton
more than Rosberg. Rosberg also knows the car much better. However, Hamilton is at least a
more proven driver if not a better one, so he might struggle in the beginning,
however in the end, Hamilton
will most likely have more points.
Sauber: Hulkenburg Vs. Gutierrez
Pretty easy choice, Hulkenburg is an astounding driver with
experience and full team-backing, and Gutierrez is a solid driver, but with no
experience and little backing. The winner will definitely be Hulkenburg.
Force India :
Sutil Vs. Di Resta
This intra-team rivalry is shaping up to be a seriously
intense one. Sutil is an aggressive person on and off the track, and Di Resta
will be looking to move up after 3 consecutive unsuccessful years of trying to
progress to a stronger team. So both drivers have a lot to prove, and the first
part of proving yourself is beating your teammate. The pace of Sutil might be
hindered by his one-year absence, but his experience will probably overcome
that, like Raikkonen when he retuned in 2012. It is a really tough decision,
but I think Sutil will come out in the lead at the end of the season.
Williams: Maldonado Vs. Bottas
Williams has been struggling for a long time now, and going
from the top to 9th place in a few years must have really hurt.
While they won’t win the championship this year, their driver choice is a step
in the right direction. Yes, Maldonado did have the most penalties in 2012, but
he won a race, put the car in the top five quite a few times, and would have
gotten some podiums, but the car let him down (Singapore 2012). Bottas on the
other hand, is like the Grosjean of Williams (minus the crashing). He’s young
and an exceptional driver. He came in on a Friday practice and finished in P8.
While practice doesn’t necessarily reflect actual pace, it does take a strong
lap to make it there. Also, I’ve seen video of him driving, and he just
genuinely just looks fast. He might even get a podium this year. However, the
winner of this bout will probably be Maldonado.
